Stress and Cavities

Did you know that many other factors can influence oral health?  Stress is a great example.  Acute stress causes the body to release stress hormones.  These hormones affect the body in multiple ways.  They affect saliva properties and hence alter the balance between bacteria in the mouth and under the gums and immunity.  This results in gum inflammation and other issues.  Stress can cause a dry mouth.   A dry mouth can cause an increase of bacterial numbers.  “Stress eating” is a well-known result of acute stress.  Needless to mention that stress eating has effects on oral and general health.
